Four volumes facilitate flexible pacing.
Complete Essentials in one year or spread it across multiple years. Use the same four volumes again in the subsequent year(s) to take advantage of the more advanced levels included in Essentials.

Flexible Learning Pace

Essentials is designed with an easily adaptable pace to meet students' needs. Choose an option that works for you!

Complete Essentials in 1 School Year

Teach one unit per week for 30 weeks! Each Part of an Essentials lesson takes approximately 60 minutes to complete. If you are using the Essentials Reader, the Essentials Reader Teacher’s Guide, and the Essentials Reader Student Activity Book, plan for an additional 30 minutes a day for a total of 1.5 hours of language arts instruction. If you are beginning with the pre-lessons, plan an additional 10 days of instruction. Plan to allow time for additional review and practice as needed.

Complete Essentials in 2 School Years

Teach one unit every two weeks. Complete Essentials in 60 weeks of instruction. Each Part of an Essentials lesson takes approximately 60 minutes to complete, so at this pace you wold need to spend about 30 minutes per day. If you are using the Essentials Reader, the Essentials Reader Teacher’s Guide, and the Essentials Reader Student Activity Book, plan for an additional 30 minutes each day, for a total of about an hour of language arts instruction. If you are beginning with the pre-lessons, plan an additional 10 days of instruction. Plan to allow time for additional review and practice as needed.

Complete Essentials at the Pace of Your Student

Dedicate a set amount of time each day to Essentials instruction. Complete as much of the lesson as you can in this time, then pick up where you left off the next day.

Essentials Units 1-7


Units 1-7

  • Apply phonemic awareness skills to learn new spelling rules.
  • 10 optional pre-lessons to strengthen foundational skills are included before Lesson 1.
  • Learn 44 phonograms and 12 spelling rules.
  • Identify schwa as a lazy vowel.
  • Count syllables and identify vowel types.
  • Form plurals.
  • Learn how to use articles and commas in a series correctly.
  • Identify nouns, verbs, adjectives, articles, and conjunctions.
  • Compose adjective-noun phrases.
  • Level A - Form compound words and use the suffixes -er and -est.
  • Level B - Form compound words and learn the meaning of 5 morphemes.
  • Level C - Learn the meaning of 41 morphemes.

Essentials Units 8-15


Units 8-15

  • Learn 17 new phonograms and 10 new spelling rules.
  • Write complete sentences.
  • Read and punctuate quotes.
  • Capitalize sentences, proper nouns, and titles of respect.
  • Identify verbs, direct objects, indirect objects, and the subject and predicate of a sentence.
  • Read and spell possessive nouns and past tense verbs.
  • Recognize dozens of new prefixes, suffixes, and roots.

Essentials Units 16-22


Units 16-22

  • Learn 10 new phonograms and 15 spelling rules, including 9 reasons for a silent final E.
  • Add suffixes to words ending in silent final E and single-vowel Y.
  • Identify pronouns, prepositions, and adverbs.
  • Write sentences with adjectival phrases, prepositional phrases, adverbial phrases, and independent clauses, and punctuate them correctly.
  • Recognize dozens of new prefixes, suffixes, and roots.

Essentials Units 23-30


Units 23-30

  • Learn the last 4 basic phonograms and the last 5 spelling rules.
  • Discover how to add a suffix to any English word!
  • Identify stressed and unstressed syllables.
  • Understand verb tense and aspect.
  • Read and spell words with assimilating sounds.
  • Write compound and complex sentences and punctuate them correctly.
  • Use coordinate adjectives and punctuate them correctly.
  • Use coordinating and subordinating conjunctions.
Every unit includes 3 levels to facilitate differentiated instruction.
